The critical part of the matter in this volume has appeared before, in a more expensive form, under the title The Art of Velasquez. The biographical information, however, which was limited then to a single paragraph, has been amplified, and now forms a separate chapter. The Author has taken advantage of the crpportunity to make a few verbal corrections, the time at his disposal not having allowed him to re-visit Madrid, as he had hoped to do. A list of the works of Velasquez, and aB ibliography, have been added by theE ditor of theS eries. It is not claimed that the list is in any sense complete; nor has Dr Williamson attempted to be critical in his attributions. He has simply recorded all the pictures attributed to Velasquez with which he is acquainted, adding such notes as are contained in catalogues or in his own note-books, and accepting the information supplied by the owners of the pictures. To the pages of the book he would refer the student for any scientific criticism or for authoritative statements as to the authenticity of disputed pictures.
