Slip is a form of coloured liquid clay which can be used for decoration on its own or covered with glaze at a later firing. Slip is an ancient concept and was used on Roman and Greek vases. There are many techniques in regard to using slips such as sponging, marbling, brushing on, using stencils, trailing, sgraffito and inlay amongst others, and this book will cover them all using contemporary potters work as illustrations. It will explain how to make up slips and engobes, as well as ways of using them at higher temperatures and with glazes. The book is illustrated with working potters in action and many images of finished pieces.
John Mathieson is the author of our popular ceramic handbook Raku, in the Ceramic Handbooks series, and a contributor to various ceramics journals.
