Alison Noice is a Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner and an Examiner of Yachtmaster Instructors. She also trains and examines Radio Instructors, runs short courses in radar, VHF radio and first aid, teaches Day Skipper and Yachtmaster theory courses and examines Yachtmaster Offshore candidates. Amazingly she still finds time to sail for pleasure in her much-loved Sigma 33.

Hardback. Etat : Good. Yachtmaster for Sail and Power (2010) by Alison Noice Adlard Coles Nautical | ISBN: 9781408122860 Condition: Good As sold by Crappy Old Books There are books that promise escape, romance, and a carefree life upon the waves, and then there are books like Yachtmaster for Sail and Power , which quietly remind you that if you intend to go to sea with any seriousness, you had better know what you are doing. This is not a volume for lounging decoratively in deck shoes while holding a gin and vaguely indicating the horizon. It is a book for people who would prefer not to embarrass themselves, misjudge a tidal stream, or discover too late that confidence and competence are not quite the same thing. Alison Noice?s guide is aimed squarely at that highly respectable ambition: becoming a Yachtmaster, whether under sail or power. In other words, this is the sort of book one consults when one wishes to exchange cheerful amateurism for something a little more exacting. Seamanship, navigation, rules, weather, passage planning, boat handling, safety, judgement: all the deeply sensible things that stand between a well-run voyage and an anecdote beginning with, ?At first we thought it would probably be fine.? Published by Adlard Coles Nautical in 2010, it comes from exactly the right stable. Adlard Coles books have long been trusted by sailors because they generally avoid the more glamorous delusions of nautical life and focus instead on helping readers stay safe, capable, and only mildly damp. There is a particular dignity to books of this kind. They do not shout. They do not seduce. They simply offer hard-won knowledge in the calm expectation that the reader understands the value of not getting things wrong at sea. The title itself has a stern, faintly aspirational charm. Yachtmaster for Sail and Power suggests a condition of enviable maritime authority: the sort of person who knows the buoyage, respects the forecast, handles a berth without theatre, and can explain tidal gates without consulting three different people and a biscuit tin full of panic. Most of us, naturally, are some distance from that ideal. Hence the existence of the book. There is also something quietly comic about the whole culture of nautical qualifications. The dream, of course, is freedom: open water, distant harbours, wind, spray, and noble self-reliance. The reality, before one earns the right to that dream, involves charts, lights, collision regulations, secondary ports, engine checks, and learning not to say anything ridiculous on the radio. Yachtmaster for Sail and Power belongs to the practical side of romance, which is where all worthwhile adventures are actually made possible. Books like this are also satisfying because they represent a very particular sort of adult seriousness. They assume the reader wants to improve, to prepare properly, and to acquire knowledge that may one day prove rather important. That gives them a usefulness few books can claim. A novel may improve your interior life; a good yachtmaster manual may improve your chances of arriving in one piece and with your dignity broadly intact. This copy is in good condition , showing the expected signs of age and handling but remaining sound, clean, and entirely ready for further service. It is the sort of book that belongs on a chart table, in a sailing bag, or beside a stack of notes taken by someone determined to become slightly less alarming on the water. An excellent choice for sailors, motor cruisers, Yachtmaster candidates, and anyone with the good sense to suspect that going to sea is best undertaken with preparation rather than optimism alone. Yachtmaster for Sail and Power is practical, authoritative, and reassuringly free of nonsense ? exactly what one wants in both a nautical guide and, ideally, a skipper. N° de réf. du vendeur 6016
