Les Powles, now 85 and living aboard his beloved self-built yacht Solitaire in Lymington Yacht Haven, is an ordinary yachtsman with an extraordinary tale to tell. He won Yachtsman of the Year in 1981 in recognition of his amazing achievements, and after completing his last great adventure, Lymington Yacht Haven gave him a free berth for life.

The last one saw him given up for dead when he hadn't been heard from for four months. His boat had been damaged in a storm, he'd lost all communications and had virtually run out of food.
