It is a gallimaufry of intrigue, sorceries, bickerings and ravishments, savoured with gaiety and humour, told at the topmost pitch of sky scraping spirits, a book writ in ecstasy. II Apuleius the African (whether his pramomen was Lucius or whether this was added from the name of the hero of his romance is a matter for scholars and of small account) was a native of Madaura, a town on the borders of the Roman provinces of Gaetulia and Numidia. Few definite facts of his life are known and these are only vouchsafed through the media of his literary remains. He was born probably about the end of the first quarter of the second century, of parents of good station, his father being a high municipal official, and as a boy he was sent to school at Carthage, the city that was later to pay him the highest honours in her power to give.
