It is now some fifteen years since I published An Elementary Treatise on Logic, which in its third edition is still before the public. I would not, however, have the reader regard this Book as merely a compilation, condensation, abridgement or re-ar rangement of the former Work. On the contrary, it differs from it in many essential particulars. Since the time of the publication of that Treat ise, my attention has been chiefly directed to the study of the Principles andF orms of reasoning, as they occur in the actual practice of men who are engaged in the various intellectual processes that are called for in the prosecution of the affairs of life, and I am able to offer here a Work, which, I think, will be found, in many respects, to be especially worthy of attention.
