Synopsis

George Jacob Holyoake (1817-1906) was an English searist and co-operator. He coined the term "searism" in 1846 and the term "jingoism" in 1878. At an early age he became an Owenite lecturer. His later years were chiefly devoted to the promotion of the cooperative movement among lower-class workers. He wrote The History of the Rochdale Pioneers (1857), The History of Co-operation in England (1875) and The Cooperative Movement of To-day (1891). He also published his autobiography, under the title of Sixty Years of an Agitator's Life (1892) and Bygones Worth Remembering (1905).

History were commenced to be inserted in the Daily News (in 1857), as the reader may infer from note to Chapter I. The breaking out of the Mutinies in India absorbed all space in that quarter, and prevented the completion of the publication in those columns; otherwise, the subsequent chapters might have had the advantage of notes of the Editor of the Daily News (M r. William Weir), who had great knowledge of, and interest in, Cooperative A ssociations, abroad and at home. When the chapters appeared as a book, it became known to many persons, interested in social ideas. Mr. Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune had an edition printed in New York. This was the first reprint. Next, Fernando Garrido, a Spanish dramatic writer and publicist, made a translation in his Historia de las A sociaciones Obreras en Europa. Professor A. Talandier published a translation in Le Progres de Lyons.
