Known for his melodic and charming poetry, Dowson an Englishman belonged to the circle of gifted poets known as the Decadents. This group was formed as a reaction against Victorianism. In 1891 he met the love of his life, Adelaide Foltinowicz who inspired him to write most of his poetry. The same year his best known poem, Non Sum Qualis Eram Bonae sub Regno Cynarae, was published. After Adelaide's marriage to another man in 1897, Dowson moved to France. He was brought back to England by R.H. Sherard. Two of Dowson's novels, A Comedy of Masks (1893) and Adrian Rome (1899) were published in collaboration with Arthur Moore. He also wrote a book of short stories, Dilemmas (1895). However, he is generally recognized for his poetry, Verses (1896) and Decorations (1899).
