Biographie de l'auteur

David T. McMahan graduated from Vincennes University with an A.S. degree. He received B.S. and M.A. degrees from Indiana State University and received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has taught courses which span the discipline of communication, including multiple courses in interpersonal communication, media, communication education, theory and criticism. David s research interests also engage multiple areas of the discipline with much of his research devoted to bridging the study of relationships and media. This work includes examining the discussion of media and the incorporation of catchphrases and media references in everyday communication. A great deal of research has been derived from his experiences in the classroom and his commitment to education. His early work in this area focused on communication competence, self-conception, and assessment. His focus has since shifted toward topics that include both media and relationships, such as contradictions within advisor-advisee relationships and discussions of media in the classroom. His published work has appeared in journals such as Review of Communication, Communication Education, and Communication Quarterly as well as edited volumes. David is a member of the National Communication Association, Central States Communication Association, Eastern Communication Association, Iowa Communication Association, and Speech Communication Association of Puerto Rico. In addition, he has served numerous roles within these organizations. David has received multiple awards for his work in the classroom and has also been the recipient of a number of public service and academic distinctions. He hopes to someday become a cattle baron.

Steve Duck taught at two universities in the UK before taking up the Daniel and Amy Starch Distinguished Research Professorship in the Communication Studies Department at the University of Iowa in 1986 where he is also an Adjunct Professor of Psychology. He has taught several interpersonal communication courses, mostly on interpersonal communication and relationships, but also on nonverbal communication, communication in everyday life, construction of identity, and communication theory. Always by training an interdisciplinary thinker, Steve has focused on the development and decline of relationships from many different perspectives although he has also done research on the dynamics of television production techniques and persuasive messages in health contexts. Steve has written or edited 50 books on relationships and other matters, was the founder of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships and its editor for its first 15 years. His 1994 book Meaningful Relationships: Talking, Sense and Relating won the G R Miller Book Award from the Interpersonal Division of the National Communication Association. Steve was the co-founder of the series of Interpersonal Conferences on Personal Relationships that began in 1982. He was the winner of the first Outstanding Graduate Mentor, University of Iowa 2001; the Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award National Communication Association (2004) for dedication to excellence, commitment to the profession, concern for others, vision of what could be, acceptance of diversity, and forthrightness . He wishes he could play the piano.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Basics of Communication is the first introductory communication textbook to explore fundamental communication concepts, theories, skills, and contexts with a thematic integration the relational perspective.

The book s approach is to make the topics covered self-development, interpersonal communication, group communication, public speaking, media//technology, etc. coalesce by exploring the relational basis of all communication as a major feature of students lives.

This text provides a basic introduction to the usual topics, but does so in a number of different ways by emphasizing the importance of relationship contexts in the enactment of social life. The authors explore the ways relationships (between each other, between family members, between media and end-user or consumer) affect communication, and vice versa. The underlying theme of relationships usefully connects many aspects of a basic text that will give it a coherence and a relevance to students that has been previously missing, obscure, or under emphasized.
