Thetime could be anytime. The place could be anywhere. A man or a woman has a dog,and the dog dies. We grieve to think such a noble, loyal, strong spirit hasgone from our lives. But has it? Author Jim Dustin, who has enjoyed the companyof several dogs in his life, supposes that the spirits of many dogs advance toa higher purpose. We may encounter our old pups somewhere down the road, or wemay not. Possibly they have gone on to even higher duties than we can imagine.Consider Abelard Belisarius, who in ?Sam? holds downresponsibilities among the 96 billion levels of Heaven. Or Buck, who was anabject coward in life, but something more in death, as you will read in ?WhereSleeping Dogs Lie.? In ?Jake,? you?ll meet a beagle whose loyalty to hismistress transcends even the laws of space and time. And in ?Death of aMessiah,? you?ll be introduced to a dog whose master resists the greatesttemptation if it means sacrificing his best friend. These dogs and others arethe heroes of the seven stories that sprang from Jim Dustin?s experience withreal dogs and his unfortunate possession of an unreal imagination.
JimDustin lives way, way back in the mountains of Colorado where he hikes, camps, fishes, snowshoes, skates, skies and otherwise enjoys the hell out of the mostbeautiful land in the west. Before that, he spent 25 years in Missouri, and before that, 18 years in Wisconsin. Mr. Dustin is an accomplished writer who has wonmany awards for his nonfiction writing over a 30-year career as a journalist. He began writing these stories to comfort a friend who was fond, perhaps overlyfond of her dogs. It?s hard for us to lose our best friends, but Mr. Dustinimagines that there might be another calling for these dogs after that sadevent.
