""A Sailor's Log Recollections of Forty Years of Naval Life"" is a memoir written by Robley D. Evans, a retired United States Navy admiral who served from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The book chronicles his experiences and adventures during his four decades in the Navy, from his early days as a cadet to his rise through the ranks to become a highly respected and decorated officer. Evans shares his personal insights into the many challenges and triumphs he faced during his naval career, including his involvement in the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion in China, and World War I. He also describes the day-to-day life of a sailor, from the routines of shipboard life to the camaraderie and friendships that develop among crew members. With its vivid descriptions of naval battles, exotic locales, and the inner workings of the Navy, ""A Sailor's Log"" offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a sailor during a pivotal period in American history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in naval history or the experiences of those who serve in the armed forces.1901. Illustrated. During the course of a colorful naval career Evans rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and had two destroyers named after him. One example of Evan's character can be found in the following anecdote: Because of his serious wounds, as he lay helpless in the hospital, he was approached by a surgeon who suggested amputation. Evans pulled out a pistol from under his pillow and said he would shoot at the first sign of a surgeon's saw. The surgeon concluded that Evans would die, and did not press for amputation. Obviously, the young ensign survived. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
