Synopsis

The Green Pastures is a fable written by Marc Connelly. The book tells the story of a group of African American children who gather under a tree to listen to their elders tell stories about the Bible. The stories are retellings of the Old Testament, but with a twist. The characters are all African American, and the stories are told in a way that makes them relevant to the children's lives. The book is a celebration of African American culture and spirituality, and it has been praised for its use of dialect and its portrayal of African American life in the early 20th century. The Green Pastures was first published in 1929 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1930. It has since been adapted into a successful play and a film.1929. American dramatist Connelly is best known for his Pulitzer Prize- winning play The Green Pastures, a fantasy of biblical history presented in terms of the religious life of Southern blacks; it was based on Roark Bradford's book Ol' Man Adam an' His Chillun. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
