Synopsis

""Character and Characteristic Men"" is a book by Edwin P. Whipple that explores the concept of character and the qualities that define it. The book is divided into two parts, with the first part examining the nature of character and the second part profiling various individuals who embody different aspects of it. Whipple argues that character is not merely a matter of moral virtue, but also encompasses traits such as courage, perseverance, and creativity. He uses examples from literature, history, and contemporary society to illustrate his points and provide inspiration for readers seeking to develop their own character. The second part of the book features profiles of notable figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Abraham Lincoln, highlighting the specific qualities that made them ""characteristic men."" Overall, ""Character and Characteristic Men"" is a thoughtful and engaging exploration of a timeless topic that remains relevant today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Présentation de l'éditeur

The essays in the present volume were written at various times, and without any view to tlieir connected publication ;but they all more or less illustrate one idea of the naturo, j Towth, and influence of character. With the exception of those on Thackeray, Hawthorne, and A gassiz, they were all originally delivered as lectures or addresses, and the style doubtless exhibits that perpetual scepticism as to the patience of audiences which torments the lecturer during the brief hour in which he attempts to hold their attention. The first six of the essays, with the exception of that on Intellectual Character, were piiblished in Harper s Magazine, between July and November, 1857, and the paper on A gassi? was also contributed to that periodical.
