Captured by the Germans early in the "Battleof the Bulge', the book is mainly about his POW experiences. He repeatedlytried to escape, and managed to break out of Stalag XIII at Hammelburg on threeoccasions. His time of freedom varied from hours to several days, but wasrecaptured in each instance. He recounts first hand, the attempt by GeneralPattons Third Army to free Pattons son-in-law from thecamp and how that raid raised then dashed the POWS hope of freedom. The author, along with his American, British, Australian and Russian fellow prisoners wereeventually freed by the 3rd Infantry Division.

Biographie de l'auteur

Roy Thomas Veary was inductedinto the service in 1943 where he eventually worked his way up to becoming anInfantry cadre instructor. When the Germans made their counter move in 1944 theauthor joined the 70th Infantry Division just prior to their being shippedoverseas as part of the strategy to strengthen the lines of the allies duringwhat became known as the "Battle ofthe Bulge". He started writing in 1994 when he was contacted by his old ArmyDivision who requested the author to enlighten them as to circumstancesregarding a patrol he was on that disappeared from the battlefield without arace. "Route Step" resulted.
