Synopsis

Hester Fielding's life is the stuff of drama: a bleak Yorkshire childhood transformed by the discovery of her amazing gift as a dancer, a dangerous love affair that can only lead to heartbreak, and a secret that would topple her from her pinnacle of fame if it ever came out. Now Hester has returned to Yorkshire, to Wychwood, where each year at Christmas, a ballet is performed on Twelfth Night in the little theatre. This year, the brilliant young choreographer Hugo Carradine has been invited to direct the ballet Sarabande. Claudie Drake is Hugo's lover and the ballet's star--every inch a prima ballerina in style--but is she just a little past her best?

Commentaires

Starting at the age of 5 when she is sent from Paris to Yorkshire after her mother dies, this production recounts Estelle's story as she finds her own way through her dreary, unhappy life into the world of ballet. The story itself is a ballet as Maggie Mash reads it. Magically, the characters come out from the page as she comes upon them. They are hidden in a chapter until her imagination touches them and they appear as real people speaking in exactly the right tone with the appropriate sentiments. As with all magicians, the "how-does-she-do-it" factor is overwhelming. Maggie Mash is a great narrator. J.P. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
