Synopsis

Lucy Wickwright, hardworking maid-servant to the daughter of the Baron of Cant, is perhaps a bit too good at her job. Lucy does what she's told, never lies, and always takes the blame for the troublesome whims of her mistress.

But Lucy's eagerness to please puts her in the service of a shadowy rebellion, which threatens to shake the foundations of the Barony and forever change her life in Castle Cant. When Lucy discovers the shocking secret that could bring unimagined power to the rebels, will she choose to foil the forces that would exalt her, or betray the one she discovers she loves most in the world?

With dazzling wit and grand storytelling, heart-racing action and adventure, and a mad cast of delightfully eccentric characters, The Secret of Castle Cant brings to life two unforgettable heroines who learn that courage and devotion are more than words in storybooks, and that even the least of girls hides the secret of greatness within.

Grade 5-9-In the Barony of Cant, the introduction, importation, and use of chewing gum is the scourge of the land. Commonly referred to as the cud, the addictive substance is likened to opium, used by nobles and scorned by revolutionaries. In this quaint land, rarely found on maps, 11-year-old Lucy Wickwright is the maidservant to the Baron's daughter, Lady Pauline. An ideal servant, she is obedient and doesn't mind being the scapegoat. But when she inadvertently gets mixed up with the rebel forces and starts spying for them, she finds herself unintentionally entwined in the fight against chewing gum. Will she be able to resist the romanticism of the revolutionists or will she betray her mistress by accepting her role as the head of the Lucine Party? K.P. Bath's quirky, often humorous novel (Little Brown, 2004) juxtaposes modern and medieval times and is a witty commentary on politics and society in general. His writing style is reminiscent of 18th century English authors who attacked the Romantics of the day. Kerin McCue's narration is too slow paced, with frequent swallowing and pauses between chapters. Keep the book handy so listeners can enjoy its artistic embellishments, maps, and footnotes. Although this is an adventure for children, plenty of scenes will make adult listeners chuckle. The story takes place is the tiny barony of Cant, where the national pastime is chewing wads of gum. Kerin McCue effectively portrays the opposing personalities of the two main characters, 11-year-old orphan and maidservant Lucy Wickwright and her 10-year-old mistress, Pauline, the daughter of the Baron of Cant. McCue renders Lucy as wise beyond her years and a tender caregiver to the haughty and spoiled Pauline. As the two are thrown into a perilous adventure, McCue takes on distinctive voices for the array of villagers--both friends and enemies of the girls.
