Synopsis

The Silk Scarf tells the tale of the Hoffmans, a German American family happy in Bayonne, New Jersey, until World War I.

The oldest Hoffman, Fritz, works in a silk mill assisting his father. Employees strike in hopes of increasing wages. Fritz falls in love with striker Grace Flynn.

The second oldest, Emil Hoffman, enlisted in the service overseas.

Wilhelmina Hoffman is a talented pianist. When the new minister, Frederick Brinkman, arrives, she knows the older women will vie for his attention. The minister sets his sights on Wilhelmina.

The youngest Hoffman, Herman, is an energetic boy who loves baseball and hates being bossed by his sister.

When Fritz and Grace as well as Wilhelmina and Frederick marry, they learn the art of getting along. The 1920s begins with great promise. The families grow and thrive. Wilhelmina and Grace become close friends.

As the decade ends, the silk mill that supported the Hoffmans is closing and the stock market dipping.
