Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. This large print edition features an easy-to-read larger type size while preserving the complete text of the original edition. Maryland native Harry Hannum, twenty-two, has had unfulfilling menial jobs in eastern Kansas and has had his heart broken in Atchison by blonde beauty Elizabeth Pepper, who ran off with a railroad man. When the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe line completes its tracks to Dodge City in 1872, Harry heads to the new "buffalo town" to start over. Robert Wright, one of the town founders and owner of a prosperous general store, hires him as a clerk, and Harry is determined to keep that job no matter what. What happens next is that a forty-two-year-old oddball named Wyatt Matters comes into his life. The brilliant, self-educated Mr. Matters, who wears a top hat and a purple bowtie, doesn't say anything about his past but talks knowledgably and endlessly about everything else. He dislikes leading citizens such as Wright for being greedy and the buffalo hunters for eliminating the lifeblood of the Plains Indians. Most of all, though, he hates the young gun-toting whiskey drinkers responsible for most of the shootings and killings going on in wild and woolly Dodge. Mr. Matters sets out on a one-man mission to bring gun control and law and order to his adopted city. He takes Harry under his wing as a protege and introduces him to auburn-haired beauty Jane Hankin, who almost immediately makes Harry forget Elizabeth Pepper. Trouble is Jane seems more interested in Wyatt Matters and later in a gambler named Matt Sullivan. Matt becomes one of Dodge's many crime victims, but his death sends Jane into a downward spiral of depression and psychological distress. Harry helps break her out of it but suffers his own chronic distress while attempting the even more difficult task of winning Jane's heart. Wyatt Matters sees law and order finally come to Dodge, and Harry Hannum not only gets a good education from his mentor but also learns his closely guarded secrets. Both men lose Jane to a vaquero who arrives in Dodge before the longhorns do and eventually whisks her off to Texas. They will see her again, though, when she returns in trying circumstances.
