Lawrence served in the United States Submarine Services as an electrician, became journeyman wireman electrician with Local 903, sold insurance and vacuum machines, truck farming, and dealer in motorcycles, restaurant, furniture store, and vineyard and ran an old country store for 25 years. After retirement he ran a commercial winery for Muscadine and Elderberry wine for 10 years. He still makes wine for himself and helps his friends make wine. He started cooking about Age 9. His hobbies are fishing, hunting, gardening, shooting the bull around an old wood stove in the wintertime, reading, art, being a clown, writer and inventor (he invented the "Toe Hoe"). He wrote a book containing many of his recipes called Blow Your Weight Away.
