Synopsis

Young Gary Brackett had no higher ambition than to run the New Mexico family farm as well as he possibly could. He would care for his mother and sister for as long as they needed him, and at some future time, if he met the right girl, he expected to marry and have a family. He had not thought much beyond that. Not until that day, his 21st birthday, when his mother had handed him the envelope containing the letter from his dead father. That was to change everything.The Alafarians is the story of how Gary's life was changed as a result of events set in motion on that day. Parallel events were taking place on the Earth and neighboring planets at he same time, all to come together in an unexpected climax, 300 years in Gary's future.Many years later Gary Brackett's descendant, Alexander Hayden, made his own discovery of ancient technology, namely time travel. Time Out is the story of those happenings. The events that spun off from that, as well as Alex's meeting his life partner, Anna, make up a story set in more relatively placid times. There is still travel between distant planets, a peril thwarted, and the introduction of an alien race, to keep that story interesting.Alex and Anna raised a large family. Their great grandson Robert O'Brien made a discovery of his own in the form of a sealed canister left by a scientist of the Ancient Sharian race. His world was ending due to global cooling. He had been developing real time, long range communication, when he grew old and died. Fortunately he had saved his work for future generations. All that was left for Robert to do was to grow up, learn how to decipher the ancient writings, and adapt it for use by the present generations. Robert with the help of his wife Martha, was able to pull together bits and pieces of several ancient technologies, and put the whole thing together to form a Communication Breakthrough.

Authorhouse asked me to write a few words of introduction. This is it and as good as it is going to get. Kind of makes me wish that I had led a more interesting life, but isn't that why we read books?I was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1933 and I believe that I can remember the experience. The times were hard but I honestly never noticed. My father had gone to school to learn farm management. I remember a farm in Hopedale, Mass, and then another in Richmond, Mass, which Dad managed. Housing was furnished at both locations. Eventually my parents were able to re-assemble the family farm in Westboro, Mass, which had been fragmented by various inheritances. I don't remember ever having very much money, but I did have a dog, a Shetland pony, a heifer, and a bantam rooster which I called my own. That was in the 1940s. There were 27 working farms in Westboro then. Today there are none.I did well in school up until homework became a requirement. After that I did only what I had to in order to move on to the next grade. Exploring the woods and swamps with the neighborhood kids held much greater appeal. My teachers complained that I had the potential to do a lot better, but spent too much time looking out the classroom windows. I guess that made me a dreamer. I did a lot of that. I graduated from high school in 1951 with no intention of ever setting foot inside a school again. After several months of a factory job, which I found very interesting by the way, I decided to join the Air Force. They sent me to Mineral Wells, Texas. The best thing to come out of that experience was meeting and marrying the most beautiful girl I ever had seen. Now 53 years later she is still my best friend and the love of my life. I always wanted to fly and at one point in my tour in Texas, nine of us were ordered to the base theater where we were informed that out of all the enlisted men stationed there, we were qualified for training as pilots.
