Synopsis

IN THE ABSENCE OF GEORGIA Chloe notices that her mom is bleeding and rushes to the neighbors. Her mom is 8 months pregnant and has lost too much blood. Georgia dies on the operating table. Chloe remembers the funeral. Chloe is told that if she speaks about the abuse, she and her siblings will be separated and put in orphanages. Chloe will never see her brother and sister again. Chloe cannot undo the fact of being the "other woman's child." Chloe greatest fear is that she will be cruel, hateful, and vindictive, because that is what surrounds her life. This book is dedicated to my daughter, Jeanette. Everyday she asked if I was writing. She insisted the truth be told. The legacy of Georgia lives on in Jeanette, who is such a determined young woman. She has many dreams and questions everything. Her spirit is free, as it should be. To my family, Felix, Joseph, Jeanette, and Felix Jr, who have endured my rigorous schedule these last six months. To my sons, Felix Jr, and Joseph, who helped mold me into the mom I have become. Jospeh, Felix Jr, and I delivered newspapers at five in the morning. I have chased them with airborne Tupperware for weapons, and five years later, I cried at their weddings. I am proud to introduce Georgia to all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. To my granddaughter Chloe and nieces Gracie, and Andrea, and nephew Simon, whose names are very significant to our family. To my two daughter-in-laws Jenny and Stephanie, who put up with my crazy traditions. (We bury beans for a fruitful new year.) To my sister, Jenny and brother Al who know my scars, because they carry them too. To my angels Big Mama and Gracie, who taught me the meaning of respect.
