Synopsis

A General View of Positivism is a philosophical treatise written by French philosopher Auguste Comte. Published in 1848, the book lays out Comte's theory of positivism, which posits that the only way to understand the world is through scientific observation and experimentation. Comte argues that all knowledge should be based on empirical evidence and that science should be used to solve practical problems and improve society. The book also discusses Comte's ideas on the evolution of human society and the role of religion in society. A General View of Positivism is considered a seminal work in the development of modern sociology and has had a significant influence on the development of social science and philosophy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Positivism has been pretty widely discussed of late, not only by those interested in philosophy and religion, but by the general reader and the public press, perhaps but few of them, whether readers or critics, have exactly grasped the full meaning of it as a system at once of thought and of life. The vast range of the ground it covers and the technical, allusive, and close style of Comte swritings in the original have made it difficult to master the subject as a whole. It has accordingly been thought that the time has come to add to the New Universal Library a translation of The General View of Positivism,
(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
