Synopsis
Charles Dickens entered the world of travel writing with his 1850 work American Notes for General Circulation. The work reflects his 5-month trip in 1842 along the East Coast and Great Lakes regions. Dickens' astute, and often funny, observations of American society include commentary about Wall Street, the press, the prison system, and the institution of slavery.
