Synopsis

""Stoic and Christian in the Second Century"" is a comparative study of the ethical teachings of Marcus Aurelius, a Stoic philosopher and Roman emperor, with those of contemporary and earlier Christian thinkers. The author, Leonard Alston, explores the similarities and differences between these two philosophical traditions and examines how they influenced one another.Using primary sources from both Stoicism and Christianity, Alston analyzes the fundamental principles of each philosophy, such as the importance of reason, the pursuit of virtue, and the role of God or the divine in human life. He also explores how these principles were applied in practice, examining the moral and ethical teachings of Marcus Aurelius and early Christian writers such as Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian.Throughout the book, Alston highlights the ways in which Stoicism and Christianity intersected and diverged, and how each tradition influenced the other. He also explores the historical and cultural context in which these philosophies developed, providing a rich and nuanced understanding of the intellectual and moral landscape of the second century.Overall, ""Stoic and Christian in the Second Century"" offers a fascinating and insightful exploration of two of the most influential philosophical traditions in Western thought. It is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of philosophy, ethics, or religion. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Présentation de l'éditeur

My principal indebtedness in the writing of this brief essay (originally intended for the Burney Prize) is to Professor Harnack s Expansion of Christianity in the First Three Centuries, vol. i., and to Professor Dobschtltz s Christian Life in the Primitive Church. The references in the text are to the pages of the English translations published by Messrs. Williams and Norgate. For the life and aims of Marcus Aurelius and for a general statement of the ethical system in which the emperor was trained, the general reader can scarcely do better than refer to the Introduction to Dr. G. H. Rendall sadmirable translation of the Meditations M arcus Aurelius Antoninus to Himself).

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
