Were its founda} tion bad and its structure good, it would be like a rgranite fort standing on wooden piles sure sooner or later to fall by its own weight. .! Now whatever the learned may say hereafter (and the 7learned will most surely investigate this book), they rcannot undermine its foundation or destroy its strucr, .ture. Call this foundation (principle) an hypothesis, fif you choose, even aS pencer could never disprove it. rS hould some sage of the Twentieth Century declare tiiiat polarity is not a first principle, we would most ;; sincerely ask him if by first he means precedence as rei gards others, or if by first he means the most important. Being then on a foundation unassailable, the base upon which this book is built is assured. As to the structure, the authors having justified themselves as to the two methods of dealing with energy; first as constant, second as apparently transferable; no flaw can be found in the logic from start to finish.
