The Lectures, of which this volume is the first, were constituted a perpetual foundation in Harvard University in 1898, as a memorial by his wife to the late William Belden Noble, of Washington, D. C, a member of the Class of 1885. In the appendix and elsewhere in this volume will be found a brief recital of the circumstances of his life and an appreciation of his character. By his untimely death in 1896 the work which he had at heart to perform in this world was to human vision left unfinished. These Lectures are intended to carry on that work in accordance with the comprehensive spiritual ideal he had set before him.
