The subjects chosen for treatment in this volume are without exception persons whose lives have made their deep impression upon the peoples among whom they labored. Excepting that of Livingstone, the sketches are written by men who were intimately associated with the missionaries whose labors they portray, and they consequently have the value of personal testimony. Over against this great advantage, possessed by the writers, must be placed the serious disadvantage of space limitations. The story of great lives cannot be successfully compressed within the limits of a few pages.
