Drs. Robert and Mary Boesen McAuliffe provided chemical dependency services across the continuum of care from 1968 to 1990 in Minnesota and throughout the USA. They were the first to define the essence of chemical dependency as a relational illness, involving and affecting the whole person. In this revised edition of The Essentials of Chemical Dependency, originally published in 1975, the McAuliffes provide an expanded, in-depth analysis of drug addiction. They offer their "essentials approach" as one contribution to the larger professional effort to develop a unifying theory of addiction.
