Definitions are always amplified by examples familiar to students. The steps in the accounting process are discussed using the same illustration problem from chapter to chapter so that the student can connect the relationship of the steps in the accounting process. Being a basic accounting textbook, the book will provide students with a solid and strong basic accounting knowledge to better equip them to tackle more advanced accounting courses. Accounting, as a field of study is progressive; accounting knowledge is learned in stages; what is learned in basic accounting is used and applied in more advanced accounting courses. Consequently, if a student has a weak basic accounting foundation, he will have difficulty succeeding in more advanced accounting courses. The book discusses accounting as a profession, the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAPs), the steps in the accounting process and the qualitative and quantitative methods of assessing company performance. Financial statement analyses are discussed thoroughly in the final chapter. Students are provided with chapter review questions, sample examinations and numerous problems to solve in order to assist them develop their basic accounting skills.

As a faculty member teaching accounting courses in a number of educational institutions, Donatila Agtarap-San Juan was challenged to write a student-friendly accounting book that presents accounting principles and concepts in very simple understandable manner. During the course of her teaching experience, she encounters many students who have inherent anxiety about learning accounting. Most students feel that accounting is difficult to study and they seem to have a mental block absorbing accounting knowledge. As a result, accounting faculty members oftentimes experience barriers in imparting accounting knowledge. Donatila Agtarap-San Juan decided to motivate and inspire her accounting students. Over the years, she developed a step-by-step teaching method whereby she introduces accounting concepts in ordinary lay man's terms and uses examples that students can relate to. Students are always given accounting problems to verify that they learned the accounting concepts discussed in class. Donatila Agtarap-San Juan obtained her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Accounting, degree from the University of the East in Manila Philippines, graduating at the top of her class. She was a board placer when she took the CPA Board Examinations given by the Board of Accountancy of the Philippine Regulatory Commission. She obtained her Masters in Business Administration, major in Management Accounting degree from the Fordham University Graduate School of Business. Donatila Agtarap-San Juan worked for large corporations where she obtained extensive management experience in all phases of financial management and analyses, accounting, information technology, benefits administration, marketing and overall office management administration. She served in various capacities as an active member of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She was engaged as a consultant on a project basis by the World Bank.
