Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, 1857-1924) was a Polish-born English novelist. Best known for Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, Conrad wrote The Rescue to conclude "The Lingard Trilogy", based on Conrad's experience as mate on a steamer. Although it was published after Almayer's Folly (1895) and An Outcast of the Islands (1896), the events related in The Rescue are a "prequel."

Joseph Conrad was a Polish novelist who lived most of his life in Britain and didn't learn English until age 21. The young Conrad lived an adventurous life involving gunrunning and political conspiracy, and apparently had a disastrous love affair that plunged him into despair. He served 16 years in the merchant navy.In 1894, at age 36, Conrad reluctantly gave up the sea, partly because of poor health and partly because he had decided on a literary career.
Conrad's The Rover is a novel of naval life in the Napoleonic. After forty years of piracy on Eastern seas, Citizen Peyrol returns to his native France, a country now ravaged and scarred by revolution and war. Looking for peace in which to end his days, he withdraws to a remote farmhouse in a safe harbor where he finds love and joy. But the arrival of young Lieutenant Real calls Peyrol once again to action in a mission of danger, patriotism, and heroism.
