The values of the left today are concerned with protecting the environment, winning more rights for Gay people, and advancing the welfare of women by protecting their rights in the workplace. The essays in this book have no quarrel with these new goals and values. What they are critical of are the extreme methods that have come to be used in the struggle for their achievement-the various forms of political correctness-denial of reality, pseudo-stupidity, the use of threats and intimidation, and the substitution of ideology for common sense. The point of view of this collection is that of someone who has lived through the important events and crises of the last seventy-five years, and of someone who has studied human nature in the consulting room for half a century.
