About the Author I was born in Sunderland, at that time a major shipbuilding town at the mouth of the river Wear, in north-east England. Much of my life until my early twenties was spent at Seaham Harbour, a coastal coal-mining town to the south of Sunderland. The shipyards and pits are gone, but the region's dialect and individuality retain their vitality. Several poems in my earlier collection, The Powers That Be (O,U.P.) and also in the present volume, seek to convey this. Others have to do with contemporary international politics, including the invasion of Iraq, as well as with personal relationships and with words themselves. I studied and taught English Literature at Durham and Oxford, and held posts at Toronto and Saarbrucken, and was a founding member of staff at York University. I retired as Emeritus Professor at Leicester University. I have published critical books and essays on a range of writers, and edited works by Marlowe, Pope, and Johnson. I have published work on the subjects of Laughter in Heaven and also the traditional rhetorical question ubi sunt? ('where are they gone?)', and hope to publish these materials in book form. I see this work as nourishing active creative writing, but my poetry is not markedly allusive. I live with my wife Dr Eithne Henson, in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire.
