Synopsis

Le jeune couple, Jim et Lil Rutherford, a quitté la Caroline du Nord à la recherche de l"endroit idéal pour s"installer et élever une famille. Ils atteignent enfin le fleuve Mississippi et revendiquent leurs terres, construisent une petite cabane et commencent le dur labeur. Ils découvrent bientôt qu'ils ne sont pas seuls dans le désert et rencontrent leur voisin le plus proche, le Dr James Travis. Ils apprennent également qu"il y a une colonie à quelques kilomètres plus bas de la rivière appelée Lonsdale, un endroit qui devient rapidement plein de cupidité et de corruption. Ils survivent à une attaque indienne. Au fil du temps, Jim & Dr. Travis construisent les plus grandes plantations le long de la rivière. Le Tennessee devient un État en 1896 et Jim est élu pour siéger à la Première Assemblée. Il se rend dans la capitale où il rencontre le gouverneur, John Sevier, et un autre politicien, Andrew Jackson. Pendant que Jim a des ennuis, se bat en duel, survit et rentre chez elle avec une femme qui est très contrariée contre lui par de fausses rumeurs qu"elle a entendues. Les Indiens prennent leur fils unique, qui est laissé paralysé quand il est jeté d'un bluff. Après l'achat de la Louisiane, Jim emmène sa famille à la Nouvelle-Orléans pour rencontrer des médecins français. Le point culminant du livre est le tremblement de terre géant de 1811, qui détruit Lonsdale et son mal et crée le lac Reelfoot près de la plantation de Jim. Le Mighty Mississippi coule en arrière! The young couple, Jim and Lil Rutherford, has left North Carolina in search of the perfect place to settle down and raise a family. They finally reach the Mississippi River and claim their land, build a tiny cabin and begin the hard work. They soon discover that they are not alone in the wilderness and meet their nearest neighbor, Dr. James Travis. They also learn there is a settlement a few miles down the river called Lonsdale, a place that is fast becoming full of greed and corruption. They survive an Indian attack. As time passes, Jim & Dr. Travis build the largest plantations along the river. Tennessee becomes a state in 1896 and Jim is elected to serve in the First Assembly. He travels to the capitol where he meets the governor, John Sevier, and another politician, Andrew Jackson. While there Jim gets into trouble, fights a duel, survives and goes back home to a wife who is very upset with him over untrue rumors she has heard. Indians take their only son, who is left paralyzed when he is thrown off a bluff. After the Louisiana Purchase, Jim takes his family down river to New Orleans to meet with French doctors. The climax of the book is the giant earthquake of 1811, which destroys Lonsdale and its evil and creates Reelfoot Lake near Jim's plantation. The Mighty Mississippi flows backward! "The damn Turncoat!"

Biographie de l'auteur

Drew Shankle was a well known Mississippi newspaperman. His career began at age 9 In Charleston, Miss., working for the weekly Miss. Sun. By age 14 his mentor, Skipper Meriwether, the editor and publisher had him writing news articles and putting the paper together. After finishing high school at age 16, he took a newspaper job in Greenwood, Miss. At age 20 he relocated to Columbus, Miss., where he was Managing Editor for many years at the daily Commercial Dispatch. He also wrote for the Commercial Appeal in Memphis and the Associated Press. He had won many awards for his reporting and writing. At his death he was Editor-publisher of the weekly Donna News.
