Dick Hart retired after 40 years as a rangeland ecologist, doing research on livestock grazing management and related topics, and reporting his findings in assorted scientific journals and conference proceedings. He also writes about historical ecology of the Great Plains, presents a re-creation of Teddy Roosevelt, and writes and recites poetry. Return of the Rexall Wrangler is his second published book of poetry. It started out like the first, as a book of cowboy poetry, with rhyme and meter and all that.But then other subjects and verse forms crept in. So, in addition to cowboy/Western poems, there are poems about growing up on Iowa farms, family studies historical and modern, nature, religion, etc. You'll find his first attempt at a sonnet (Shadows in the Afternoon) and a few examples of blank verse (meter but no rhymes). In any case, almost every poem is about something that happened to Dick, a friend, or a family member. And if it didn't happen exactly as described.well, it should have.
