Ordinances, from the opening of the Long Parliament to the death of the Protector, does not exist, unless indeed it is hidden away in some library inaccessible to the public. The authorised, and best known collection, that of Henry Scoble, Clerk of the Parliament after the death of Thomas May, professes only to give the A cts and Ordinances that were in force at the end of the Parliamentary Session of 1656. Authentically recorded details of the various experiments in legislation during this period are thus wanting, and they have to be sought in the contemporary newspapers, not always impartial or well informed, in the conflicting and inaccurate accounts of the Cavalier and Roundhead presses, or in the chance and not easily discoverable store of some private collector. From such a thicket of embrangled briars it is not easy to pluck the flower of accuracy, but I have striven to do so, and in the hope that I may have succeeded have sent these pages to the press. F.
