The Common Objects Of The Country is a book written by John George Wood and published in 1897. The book is a comprehensive guide to the natural objects and phenomena found in the British countryside. The author takes the reader on a journey through the fields, woods, and waters of rural England, describing in detail the plants, animals, and geological features that can be found there. The book is divided into chapters, each one dedicated to a specific type of object, such as trees, flowers, birds, insects, rocks, and fossils. Each chapter is illustrated with detailed drawings and engravings that help the reader identify the objects described.Wood's writing style is engaging and informative, and he provides a wealth of information about each object, including its habitat, behavior, and uses. He also includes interesting anecdotes and historical facts, making the book not only educational but also entertaining.Overall, The Common Objects Of The Country is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world, and a fascinating glimpse into the rural life of 19th-century England. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. In the following pages will be found short and simple descriptions of some of the numerous objects that are to be found in our fields, woods, and waters. As this little work is not intended for scientific readers, but simply as a guide to those who are desirous of learning something of natural objects, scientific language has been studiously avoided, and scientific names have been only given in cases where no popular name can be found. In so small a compass but little can be done; and therefore I have been content to take certain typical objects, which will serve as guides, and to omit mention of those which can be placed under the same head. Every object described by the pen is illustrated by the pencil, in order to aid the reader in his researches ;and the subjects have been so chosen that no one with observant eyes can walk in the fields for half-an-hour without finding very many of the objects described in the book.
