Synopsis
Lucian's True History is a satirical work of fiction written by the ancient Greek writer Lucian of Samosata in the 2nd century AD. The book is a parody of the travelogue genre and tells the story of a group of sailors who set out on a voyage to explore the world beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the Strait of Gibraltar). Along the way, they encounter a variety of strange and fantastical creatures and events, including a battle between the armies of the moon and the sun, a journey to the center of the earth, and a visit to a utopian society inhabited by giant birds. The book is notable for its humor and its use of absurdity and satire to critique the conventions and assumptions of classical literature and philosophy. Despite its title, Lucian's True History is entirely fictional and should not be taken as a serious historical account.Illustrated By William Strang, J. B.
