Synopsis

""A Brage-Beaker With The Swedes: Or Notes From The North In 1852"" is a travelogue written by W. Blanchard Jerrold in 1854. The book chronicles the author's journey through Sweden in 1852, during which he visited various cities and towns and met with locals. The title of the book refers to a traditional Scandinavian drinking vessel called a Brage-Beaker, which the author acquired during his travels. The book is divided into chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of Swedish culture, history, and society. Jerrold provides detailed descriptions of the landscape, architecture, and people he encounters, as well as his impressions of Swedish customs and traditions. He also delves into Swedish history, discussing the country's Viking past and its more recent political developments.Throughout the book, Jerrold offers his own observations and opinions on Swedish culture, often comparing it to British culture. He is particularly interested in the role of women in Swedish society, and he devotes several chapters to discussing their education, employment opportunities, and social status.Overall, ""A Brage-Beaker With The Swedes"" provides a fascinating glimpse into Sweden in the mid-19th century, as seen through the eyes of a curious and observant traveler. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
