""A Plea For The Antiquity Of Heraldry: With An Attempt To Expound Its Theory And Elucidate Its History"" is a book written by William Smith Ellis in 1853. This book aims to defend the antiquity of heraldry and explain its theory and history. Heraldry is the study and use of coats of arms and other insignia to distinguish individuals and families. The author argues that heraldry is not a recent invention but has existed since ancient times. He provides evidence from various sources, including ancient Greek and Roman literature, to support his argument. The book also explores the meaning and symbolism behind different heraldic devices and how they have evolved over time. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history and significance of heraldry. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The text of the following pages fonned part of a paper written for publication in the forthcoming sixth volume of theS ussex A rchcB ological Collections ;but being of too general a nature for a work of purely local interest, the article, On theO rigin of the Arms of someS ussex Families, to which they were introductory and explanatory, appears without them; and they are published in this manner, as an independent Essay, for the perusal, more appropriately, of heraldic students. The copious notes which are subjoined, have been subsequently added, as illustrations and elucidations of the text. Before, however, they were written, the tert was already in type, or it would have been re-constructed, embodying the new and argumentative part of the notes, and thus making the entire Essay more continuous and compact, and less tautologous. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
