La Perichole is an opera bouffe, or comic opera, in two acts composed by Jacques Offenbach in 1868. The story takes place in Lima, Peru, during the 18th century and follows the adventures of two impoverished street singers, La Perichole and her lover Piquillo. The pair are recruited by the Viceroy of Peru to perform at a royal banquet, where they catch the eye of the wealthy Don Andres, who offers to make La Perichole his mistress. Despite her love for Piquillo, La Perichole agrees to the arrangement in order to secure a better life for herself and her lover. However, when the Viceroy discovers Don Andres' plan, he intervenes and arranges for La Perichole and Piquillo to be married. The opera is known for its lively, humorous music and satirical commentary on social class and corruption. As Originally Performed In America, By Batemans Opera Bouffe Company, December 1868.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
