Synopsis

The Knickerbockers: A Comic Opera In Three Acts is a play written by Harry Bache Smith and first published in 1891. The story is set in New York City during the 19th century and follows the lives of the Knickerbocker family, a wealthy and prestigious family who are in financial trouble. The family's patriarch, Cornelius Knickerbocker, is determined to restore the family's fortune by marrying his daughter, Gertrude, to a wealthy suitor. However, Gertrude has fallen in love with a poor artist named Jack, and chaos ensues as the family tries to navigate their financial troubles and Gertrude's romantic entanglements. The play is filled with comedic moments and satirical commentary on the social and economic issues of the time.
