Spherical Trigonometry: For The Use Of Colleges And Schools, With Numerous Examples (1878) by Isaac Todhunter is a comprehensive guide to the principles and applications of spherical trigonometry. The book is intended for students and teachers in colleges and schools who are interested in learning the fundamental concepts of spherical trigonometry and how it can be applied to solve various problems in mathematics, astronomy, and geodesy. The book begins with an introduction to the basic concepts of geometry, including the definition of a sphere, angles, and arcs. It then proceeds to cover the fundamental principles of spherical trigonometry, such as the spherical triangle, the spherical sine, cosine, and tangent functions, and the law of cosines and sines. The book also provides numerous examples and exercises to help readers understand the concepts and apply them to real-world problems. These examples cover a wide range of topics, including the calculation of distances and angles on the earth's surface, the determination of the positions of stars and planets, and the measurement of the curvature of the earth.Overall, Spherical Trigonometry: For The Use Of Colleges And Schools, With Numerous Examples (1878) is an essential resource for anyone interested in learning about the principles and applications of spherical trigonometry. With its clear explanations and numerous examples, it is an excellent textbook for students and a valuable reference for teachers and professionals in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, and geodesy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Plane Trigonometry, to which it is intended as a sequel; it contains all the propositions usually included under the head of Spherical Trigonometry, together with a large collection of examples for exercise. In the course of the work reference is made to preceding writers from whom assistance has been obtained ;besides these writers I have consulted the treatises on Trigonometry by Lardner, Lefebure de Fourcy, and Snowball, and the treatise on Geometry published in the Library of Useful Knowledge. The examples have been chiefly selected from the University and College Examination Papers. In the account of Napier s Rules of Circular Parts an explanation has been given of a method of proof devised by Napier, which seems to have been overlooked by most modern writers on the subject. I have had the advantage of access to an unprinted Memoir on this point by the late R. L. Ellis of Trinity College; Mr Ellis had in fact rediscovered for himself Napier sown method. For the use of this Memoir and for some valuable references on the subject I am indebted to the Dean of Ely. Considerable labour has been bestowed on the text in order to render it comprehensive and accurate, and the examples have all been carefully verified; and thus I venture to hope that the work will be found useful by Students and Teachers. LTODHUNTER. ST JOHNS COLLEGE, August 15, 1859.
