Synopsis

The Extent and Efficacy of the Atonement is a book written by Howard Malcom in 1840. The book explores the concept of atonement in Christianity, which refers to the reconciliation between God and humanity through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. Malcom examines the extent of the atonement, asking whether it is limited to a select few or available to all. He argues that the atonement is universal and available to all, regardless of their background or beliefs. He also discusses the efficacy of the atonement, questioning whether it is sufficient to save all who believe in it. The book provides a detailed analysis of the biblical passages related to atonement and explores the historical and theological debates surrounding the topic. Malcom draws on the works of theologians and scholars from various Christian denominations, as well as his own personal experiences and reflections. Overall, The Extent and Efficacy of the Atonement is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of one of the central tenets of Christianity. It offers a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of atonement that is relevant to believers and non-believers alike. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Présentation de l'éditeur

The following dissertation was originally the introductory discourse before the Boston Baptist A ssociation, delivered by appointment, at its session in Newton, Mass., Sept. 19th, 1832, and published in pamphlet form. Three other editions have since been published, with additions; but for some years it has been quite out of print. The present edition is somewhat farther enlarged. The author feels no misgivings as to the propriety of keeping up the Church sattention to doctrinal points. It is only thus that we can prevent extensive misunderstandings, destroy that secrecy which nurtures erroneous opinions, and maintain in the minds of our members that regard for foundation principles which is the essence of rectitude.
