William Tyndale, A Biography: A Contribution To The Early History Of The English Bible is a book written by Robert Demaus and published in 1886. The book tells the story of William Tyndale, a 16th century English scholar and theologian who is best known for his translation of the Bible into English. The book provides a comprehensive account of Tyndale's life, from his early years as a student at Oxford University to his eventual martyrdom for his religious beliefs. The author explores Tyndale's motivations for translating the Bible into English, and the challenges he faced in doing so, including opposition from the Catholic Church and the English government. The book also delves into Tyndale's personal life, including his relationships with family and friends, and his struggles with poverty and illness. Overall, William Tyndale, A Biography: A Contribution To The Early History Of The English Bible is a fascinating and informative look at one of the most important figures in the history of the English Bible. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The high estimation in which Demaus s William Tyndale is held by students of the history of the English Bible is a proof of the sterling value of the work. Demaus wrote out of a full knowledge and his task was a labour of love. Hence it was but natural that the book should at once become the standard authority on the subject, which it is now admitted on all hands to be. In the fifteen years which have passed since the book was first published Tyndale sreputation has been steadily growing in popular esteem. By an ever-widening circle of reverent admirers he is recognised as one of England sgreatest benefactors. Indeed there are not lacking those who consider him to be the one man to whom modern Englishmen owe the largest debt of gratitude. London, never too prone to make haste in such matters, has at length on one of her most conspicuous sites erected a statue to the man who lived and toiled as an exile and who died as a martyr that his countrymen might have the Bible in their mother tongue. One form in which the perennial interest felt in all relating to the Bible in England manifests itself is the constant search after fresh details connected with the history of its translation into English, and after new facts in the lives of the men who did the work. It is doubtful whether we shall ever get to know much more of the personal history of Tyndale than we do at present. Yet from time to time scraps of information are added to the accumulated stock. One such has recently been given to the world in the valuable Register of the University of Oxford, edited for the Oxford Historical Society by the Rev. C. W. Boase, M.A. Mr. Boase has not only placed at my disposal his valuable Preface to the volume, but he has also furnished me with his translations of the entries in the Register referring to Tyndale. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
