The careful reader will, it is hoped, in the ensuing pages find many mutually contradictory rules laid down for his guidance, and if this book is to be of any profit, this must be so. For though twice two is invariably four, though the ace of trumps invariably takes the trick, though if ones head is cut completely off one invariably dies, the goddess of golf soars untrammelled above those very dull things known as rules without exceptions. True, like a balloon, she casts a grappling-iron to earth when she practically tells everybody to keep his eye on the ball, but in the main the perfect freedom of her service allows, nay, commands, the worshipper to perform his strokes of homage in the method that to him comes easiest Thus, James Braid, an arch-druid indeed, does not use the same ritual as Mr. J. A. T. Bramston ;the Braid-use differs in many respects from theB ramstonuse, yet both as anyone who has witnessed knows are absolutely right. The third arch-druid, again, Mr. H. G. Hutchinson, in practice certainly differs from both, but to say he was wrong would merely be to confess that one does not know what golf is.
