George Sand (1804 - 1876) is the pseudonym for a leading French novelist. Sand could often be seen around Paris in male clothing. It is a pastoral novella set in the Berry region of France. The characters are peasants whose lives are closely linked together and who depend on the land. The main character is a 28 year old German widower with three children.
