Explore how identity, purpose, and reality interlink in a bold view of the world. This edition presents a clear, approachable look at Josiah Royce’s philosophy, focusing on how real individuals embody purpose and how harmony between will and world gives meaning to life.
In these passages, the author argues that real individuals are unique embodiments of will and that the world must express purpose to be truly real. He contrasts imagined pure thought with lived experience, emphasizing that a being who satisfies an inner will is the only one who can recognize true individuality. The discussion moves to the nature of reality and how our ideas relate to the facts we investigate, suggesting that meaning ties ideas to outer realities in a dynamic, purposeful world. The text also delves into how consciousness perceives time, introducing the idea of a “specious present” that shapes our grasp of sequences and events.

Excerpt from The Conception of Immortality
I may as well begin this discussion by pointing out where, to my mind, lies the most central problem concerning man's immorality. In the real world in which our common-sense metaphysic believes, some things are obviously transient, and others, as, for instance, matter and the laws of nature, are more enduring, and perhaps (so common sense would nowadays tell us), are absolutely permanent. But permanence is of two sorts. A type may be permanent, - a law, a relationship. Thus the Binomial Theorem remains always true; and water continues to run down hill just as it did during the earliest geological periods.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a fundamental question that has occupied philosophers for centuries: What does it mean to be an individual? The author, starting from the commonplace understanding of individuality as a state of being unique and distinct, reveals the complexities inherent in this seemingly simple idea. They argue that while we naturally believe in the individuality of things, our senses and even our most abstract thinking fail to capture the true essence of uniqueness. The author proposes that the individual is not a fixed entity, but a process, an ongoing pursuit of an ideal. This pursuit, they argue, is at the heart of our most profound human experiences, from love to scientific inquiry. The author explores this idea through a captivating analysis of human relationships, highlighting the inherent mystery and irreducibility of the individuals we love. This book invites readers to engage with a deeper understanding of individuality, transcending the limitations of mere observation and definition to embrace a richer and more nuanced conception of the self and the world. Ultimately, the book argues that if individuality is real, it is bound to a teleological world where purpose, intention, and will are not merely abstract concepts but driving forces of existence.
