Unlock the practical craft of clear, persuasive writing. This guide distills a decade of study into a usable theory of style, focused on how words work to convey thought and feeling.
Written as a concise manual for learners and teachers, it frames style as the trio of Clearness, Force, and Elegance. It shows how every word, sentence, paragraph, and whole composition can be shaped by three enduring principles: Unity, Mass, and Coherence. The author also reveals a classroom‑tested method for analyzing student writing, making theory into actionable practice.
Ideal for readers who want to understand the art of expository writing and for teachers seeking a practical framework to develop students’ expressive clarity.

Excerpt from English Composition: Eight Lectures Given at the Lowell Institute
Inquiries concerning the use of this book in teaching lead me to add this statement of how I have used it at Harvard College.
In the course where I regularly use it as a text-book, compositions, called themes, of from five hundred to a thousand words, are written every fortnight. On the introductory chapter, which I direct the class to read at once, I do not formally examine the students at all; but I expect them to have read it intelligently before writing the first theme. Between the first theme and the second, I direct them to read the chapter on Words, the suggestions in which they are advised particularly to consider in writing the second theme. When this theme is handed in, each student takes the theme of a fellow-student and devotes an hour to making, in the class-room, a written analysis of its vocabulary.

These lectures were given at the Lowell I nstitute, Boston, in November and December, 1890. A ny student of the subject will at once perceive my obligation to the textbooks of Professor A. S. Hill, Professor Bain, Professor Genung, and the late Professor Mc Elroy. My excuse for offering a new treatment of the subject is that I have found none that seemed quite simple enough for popular reading. B. W. fiosTON, September,

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book details the essential elements and qualities that constitute effective writing style. The author asserts that all styles convey a combination of intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic impressions on the reader. Each style is comprised of a unique combination of these qualities. The book's author further argues that to master these elements and qualities, writers must first understand the concept of good usage. Good usage refers to the commonly accepted standards for language use within a particular time and place. For written English, good usage can be considered the de facto standard of reputable, national, and present writers and publications. The author posits that all style is composed of words, sentences, paragraphs, and whole compositions. To achieve clarity, force, and elegance in writing, the author suggests adherence to three principles: unity, mass, and coherence. Unity suggests that all writing should revolve around a single central idea. To achieve mass, the important sections of any written work should be easily identifiable. Coherence, finally, dictates that the relationship between all parts of any written work should be readily apparent. By understanding the concepts of good usage and applying these compositional principles, writers can enhance their ability to express themselves effectively.
