Excerpt from From the Greeks to Darwin
This volume has grown out Of lectures first delivered in Princeton in 1890, upon the period between Buffon and Darwin, and completed in a fuller course delivered in Columbia in 1893, which covered also the period before Buffon. When I began the study, my Obj ect was to bring forward the many strong and true features Of pre-darwinian Evolution, which are so gener ally passed over or misunderstood. When all the materials were brought together from the earliest times, the evidence of continuity in the develop ment Of the idea became more clear, and to trace these lines of development has gradually become the central motive Of these lectures. More thor ough research, which may, perhaps, be stimu lated by these outlines will, I believe, strengthen this evidence.

From the Greeks to Darwin: An Outline of the Development of the Evolution Idea by Henry Fairfield Osborn is a piece of work that got its final shape and form through various lectures that the author had delivered in the past. The book treads into the well-known territory of Darwinian evolution but provides some significant fillips to glaring lacuna that exists in the theory of evolution. Henry Fairfield Osborn deftly creates linkages between earlier theories on evolution and Darwin's theory to highlight the fact that the path breaking work of Darwin is neither isolated nor devoid of continuity from previous work on the subject.
Spread across six chapters, From the Greeks to Darwin: An Outline of the Development of the Evolution Idea revisits the work of evolutionists prior to Darwin and builds on theories and concepts that were hitherto ignored or not understood in their entirety. The notion that ideas are a product of nature is a compelling argument in the book. The author retains the premise of continuity right to the end. There is renewed vigour in understanding the contribution of Greek theorists on the subject of evolution.
Henry Fairfield Osborn is decidedly self-effacing as he attributes most of the insight in From the Greeks to Darwin: An Outline of the Development of the Evolution Idea to other scholars. However, with an impressive bibliography and engaging style of writing, this book is perfect for anyone who wishes to understand the history of evolution and the various facets to it.

This book traces the intellectual development of the idea of evolution across two dozen centuries, from the first Greek anticipations to the birth of Darwinâs theory. The author argues that although the Greeks lacked the scientific method and knowledge necessary for a full understanding of evolution, they made significant speculative contributions to the idea. Greek natural philosophy, which was deeply influenced by observation of the natural world, produced theories of transformation and natural causation that foreshadowed later scientific discoveries. Aristotle, the culmination of Greek natural philosophy, developed a comprehensive theory of the natural world that included a rudimentary understanding of evolution. The book concludes that the Greek anticipations of evolution, though incomplete and often speculative, were a vital part of the intellectual history of the idea and laid the groundwork for its eventual scientific formulation.
