Synopsis

Discover the arc of Probus’s reign and how he reshaped an empire under pressure.

This edition compiles a focused, evidence‑driven account of the emperor’s rise from Sirmium to the Danube frontier, his campaigns across Gaul and Illyricum, and his efforts to restore order through steady reforms. You’ll follow the twists of contested authority, military actions against barbarian groups, and the careful balance between expansion and consolidation that defined Probus’s rule.

  • Learn how Probus expanded and reorganized provinces along the Danube and in the east.
  • See how he used steady employment of troops, land development, and infrastructure to curb mutiny and foster loyalty.
  • Understand the debates among ancient authorities about this reign, including the roles of Zosimus, Vopiscus, and others.
  • Explore the timing of key campaigns, the triumphs celebrated, and the factors surrounding his death.
Ideal for readers of late Roman history who want a clear, readable synthesis of Probus’s military and administrative legacy, with attention to sourcing and chronology.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This essay deals chiefly with the Reign of the Emperor Probus. But the essential preliminary to an investigation of the reign of any emperor who ruled between a.d. 117 and 285 is an examination of the Augustan History, and therefore considerable space has necessarily been devoted to a discussion of the views which have been put forward, from time to time, by so many scholars. The controversy as to the date and authenticity of the Augustan History has been maintained chiefly by German, Italian and French scholars, and, so far as I am aware, no monograph dealing with the subject has yet appeared in England. Miss Orma Fitch Butler, of the Oxford College for Women (O hio), in Studies in the Life of Heliogahalus has recently discussed the question of the authorship of the Augustan History. The conclusions to which I have come were arrived at before I had had the advantage of seeing her work. The following books have been consulted :A ncient Authors Scriptores Historiae A ugustae (P eter). Zosimus. Historia Nova (M endelssohn). Aurelius Victor. Eutropius. Breviarium. Orosius. Zonaras.
